All 20 drivers on the Algarve track had a tale to tell after the Portuguese GP, with Mercedes and Red Bull leading the way as usual. But possibly one of the more interesting ones was that of the current Racing Point driver, Sergio Perez.

The Mexican driver is out of contract for 2021 and has been in contact with a few F1 teams for a potential seat. However, so far, nothing concrete has materialized about one.

Recent speculation has indicated that Perez could be on the move to replace George Russell at the backfield team Williams. However, Russell has insisted that he has a contract with the team, and is confident of driving for them in 2021.

Sergio Perez to Williams a genuine possibility?

Contrary to what reports have been stating, Russell also feels that the news of Perez occupying a Williams seat for next year is a tactic. And that the real objective of Perez’s camp is to put pressure on Red Bull to hand him a contract for next season.

Russell was quoted as saying, “I try and do my talking on the track and, as I said before, I am not concerned for next year. I know Mercedes and Toto [Wolff] have my back, Toto himself has told me that, which I absolutely trust.

“I think all of this speculation has probably been fed by the Perez camp. Who are trying to apply pressure on other teams, potentially [for] a Red Bull seat – so that’s my view on it.”

Perhaps there might be some truth to Russell’s words after all. With Alex Albon’s latest disappointment, Red Bull could train their aim at the drivers’ market – where Perez is obviously, one of the more premium options.

Racing Point were saved their blushes in Portimao, with Sergio Perez landing a P7 in the race. And it will have gotten Red Bull fans thinking of whether the Mexican could be the second enforcer they have so sorely missed out on this season.

It is no secret that Sergio Perez is the ultimate package for any F1 team. With over 8 years of F1 experience, his consistency to perform with limited resources makes him a standout candidate.

As the season draws closer, one thing is certainly clear. That the ball is now in Red Bull’s court if they do wish to make a move for Sergio Perez ahead of the new season.
