After the Eifel Grand Prix win, Hamilton was heard on the radio talking about Red Bull closing in the gap. When asked for a comment on this, Max Verstappen embraced his humorous side in an interview ahead of the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen said, “We could swap cars, I’ll show you how far we are”. Even though Max got the fastest lap in Nurburgring, he believes Red Bull is not close to Mercedes. He explained, “It is something, but we are not close enough”.

Need more top speed

Max Verstappen accepts that the car is better now, and little problems are being fixed. He even agrees that the car is a bit more stable now. However, he believes that there are still some areas that need to be worked upon.

Explaining further, Max said, “It’s not only the car, we also need a bit more top speed because in the race we are losing out on the straight.” He mentioned that they need to keep on working and trying to improve.

Max Verstappen, the lone Mercedes challenger

Max Verstappen has been the lone warrior, challenging and pushing Mercedes every weekend. In this season so far, he has registered a race win and seven podiums.

Max is currently standing at P3 in drivers’ championship, just 14 points shy of Valtteri Bottas. If it wasn’t for a few technical and power unit issues, he could have easily been splitting the Mercedes drivers in the drivers’ championship standing as well.

With a few more races to go, Max will surely be hoping for another couple wins and consistent podiums. He will hope for a P2 on the drivers’ championship by the end of 2020 Formula 1 season.
