The Sergio Perez announcement has certainly created a storm in the Formula One world. Due to exit at the end of the 2020 season, Perez stated that he currently has no Plan B for a drive.

And now, CEO and Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer has offered his two cents on the departure of the popular Mexican driver. Speaking to the team’s website, Otmar said, “Checo has been part of the Silverstone family for seven years and in that time has become one of the most complete drivers on the grid.

“Everybody at Racing Point would like to thank Sergio for his hard work and dedication over the years, and wish him every success in the future” reads a statement from the team.

Sergio Perez will look to finish the season strong

It comes as a complete u-turn based on his earlier comments, where he firmly dismissed the talks of Vettel’s arrival at the team. Perhaps it was a suggested move of keeping the Vettel rumors at bay. Otmar strongly believed Stroll and Perez were to be his driver line-up going into 2021.

But the Racing Point boss believes that there is still unfinished business for Perez here. “Although we will say goodbye at the end of the year, there are still nine races to go. And plenty of opportunities for Checo to make some more special memories with this team.

“Blisteringly quick on Saturday and Sunday, he’s established his reputation as a tenacious racer and together we have enjoyed some fantastic moments.

“If there was ever a sniff of a podium, Checo was ready to pounce, and those five podiums represent some of the finest days in the history of this team.

What’s next for Perez?

Perez currently occupies the 11th position on the driver standings with 34 points. He missed the British Grand Prix and the 70th-anniversary race at Silverstone as he tested positive for Coronavirus.

Perez still has opportunities remaining this season in 9 races to catch up with the other contenders and go out on a high note. Otmar Szafnauer was instrumental to each and every win that Checo recorded during his tenure at the Silverstone-based outfit.

Therefore, there will not be any bad blood between the two despite his sudden exit. Otmar has always thought of Perez as a person with ‘true character’ and billed him as a ‘good friend’.

The rumor mill seems to suggest that should either Haas or Alfa Romeo look to sign a new driver next season, Sergio Perez would be on top of their list.

For every F1 fan’s sake, we can only hope that Sergio Perez finds a drive for next season.
