Lance Stroll looked like he was going to win the race at the Turkish Grand Prix, having led for 32 laps. Unfortunately, everything went wrong for the Canadian from his second pit-stop as his fresh Intermediate tires suffered severe graining.

The other cars behind him started to get past him like he was an amateur as Stroll eventually limped past the finish line in P9. Later, after analyzing the car, Racing Point revealed that there was damage to the underside of the Stroll’s front wing which played a huge part in denying him the race win.

Racing Point took to Twitter to reveal what actually went wrong for the Canadian.

One of the strakes on the underside of the front wing had come loose and lodged itself in such a way that the blockage caused a significant loss of front downforce. The resultant loss of front downforce contributed to increased levels of graining,” the statement read.

According to Racing Point, misery possibly struck Stroll on lap 17 of the race, which persisted through to the chequered flag. The team tried giving Stroll a new set of Intermediates on lap 36 in a hope that it would solve the problem only made it worse.

However, it only made things worse, as the Canadian’s only wish from there would have been to finish the race in the top 10.

Stroll’s roller-coaster race at the Turkish Grand Prix

Following the qualifying in Turkey, Stroll would have hoped to get a good start to the race, and he did. He pulled away with ease and was lapping over a second faster than the others behind him. Eventually, he managed to create a 10-second gap between himself and Sergio Perez.

At one point, it was more than certain that the Canadian would win the race. However, his nightmare second and third stint during the race meant that even a top 10 finish could be out of reach. However, in the end, he managed to bring his car home in P9.

Ever since the podium in Monza, Stroll has had a very poor run in the last five Grand Prix weekends. It is definitely not fair to say that the poor show has been entirely his fault, as bad luck played a huge part in his change of fortunes.

The poor-run streak continues for Lance Stroll

In Tuscany, a puncture caused Stroll to slam his car into the barriers. The weekend was followed by the Russian Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc clipped his rear, leaving him spinning into the wall. Then came the COVID-19, which prevented the Canadian from even entering the paddock at Nurburgring.

Although he returned to the race weekend in Portimao, his comeback wasn’t particularly loud, as an incident with Lando Norris left his car with floor damage. Stroll never got to see the chequered flag as he retired from the race in an intention to save his Power Unit.

It was followed by yet another weekend in Imola where he finished the race outside the top 10.

Overall, the Canadian’s weekend in Turkey was not all that bad. After all, he turned out to be the fastest driver in qualifying, followed by 32 laps as a race leader. Hence, it could only be a matter of time before Stroll gets himself on to the top step of the podium. However, can he reclaim his lost race victory before the end of this season?
