Lewis Hamilton had a tough journey on his way to F1. However, he was supported immensely by his family growing up, especially his father Anthony who worked multiple jobs to support Lewis’s dreams, and his mother who attended his karting weekends.

Recently, a clip of Hamilton’s parents on one of their karting outings is doing the rounds on the internet.

In the video, we see Hamilton’s mother, Carmen, being asked about her feelings when Lewis won a race. To this, she replied with a single word, “Wonderful”.

A young Lewis quickly quipped in, “she’s jumping up and down in the stands.”

Lewis was also asked about his father’s reaction whenever he was having a difficult day. Hamilton then said, “…his head’s going through the roof”.

However, it was Lewis’s father Anthony who left no stone unturned, sometimes going a bit overboard, to make sure his son made it to the pinnacle of motorsport.

The duo worked together well into Lewis’s rookie years in the sport before deciding to part ways. Hamilton’s mother also split with Anthony before she could see her son make it to Formula 1.

The reason why Lewis Hamilton’s parents split up

The Briton’s parents parted ways when he was just 2 years old. After the divorce, Hamilton would go on to live with his mum, Carmen Lockhart, up till the age of 12 before moving in with his father and stepmom.

Speaking about the split, as per the Mirror, Carmen said, “Lewis was the best thing to come out of my marriage.”

“[The split] didn’t damage Lewis.”

She went on to add, “Tony wanted to be somebody and he has achieved that. I wanted a quiet life and that put a barrier between us. I couldn’t see myself in that busy, hectic lifestyle.”

However, she also gave credit to Anthony and said, “But I didn’t stop him making sure Lewis got what he wanted. Without his dad’s constant, constant work he would not have been able to continue,” lauding her ex-husband for their son’s on-track success.
