Thanks to the open nature of Formula 1, radio communications between drivers and their teams have become public knowledge and we absolutely love it. The radio messages give us insights into the drivers, how they react under stress, and their relationship with their race engineers. However, sometimes these radio messages can paint the wrong picture of a driver unless you know the entire picture. This is exactly why this revelation from Red Bull boss Christian Horner is important.

Christian Horner recently appeared on the Eff Won podcast and revealed the hilariously baffling story behind Yuki Tsunoda and his X-rated radio messages. The British boss highlighted the reason behind Tsunoda’s interesting vocabulary, based on the events leading up to his time in the circus.

Tsunoda came to England from Japan with zero command of the English language and with the desire to drive for an English team. So naturally, he was put in the Red Bull academy in South London. Well, for those who don’t know what South London is like, let the Red Bull boss give you some reference before he makes the baffling revelation.

Horner began explaining, “He came, he came over to the UK to learn English and drive with an English team that was based on the outskirts of London and they are something like a movie like Snatch or Guy Ritchie movies. So this little Japanese guy thought that motherf**ker or the word f**k was part of the English language, part of the English vocabulary. So he gets in a Formula 1 car and at his very first test he’s going, ‘I got understeer you motherf**ker’. It was hilarious!”

Well, there you have it folks, the most hilarious turn nature could’ve taken on an unsuspecting non-English speaking Japanese man. However, the AlphaTauri man now knows profanities in every sentence are not how the world communicates in English and is trying to do better. He also now has a good example in front of him.

Ever since Daniel Ricciardo joined AlphaTauri, he changed the team’s dynamic. He put the team on the front foot by challenging Tsunoda and the team to do better. However, apart from the pressure of competing with a veteran F1 driver, the Japanese driver is also picking or wants to pick up some traits of the Australian.

Reflecting on his experience driving alongside Ricciardo, Tsunoda revealed the one trait he would like to adopt.

He said, “Especially how he behaves with the team. Even in the moments that don’t go well, how he treats the team, what he says on the radio, those things give them more confidence. More happiness – ‘happiness’ is a little different, but it changes the atmosphere.”

This brought him to his immediate goal. “I want to improve on the radio. How I behave with the team in general will be key and that’s what I want to focus on, rather than scoring points whatever.”
