Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton to become world champion on the last lap of the race. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner mentioned the finale was better than any dramatic Hollywood movie.

Although the final moments of the championship were controversial, the spectacle was extraordinary. Formula One did really serve up the entertainment in terms of drama and close racing.

Christian Horner thinks the 2021 season finale was the biggest sporting event

As reported by Autosport, the Red Bull team boss mentioned that no Hollywood scriptwriter could have written drama like the last lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The intense season also brought in new fans from all around the world. The interest was off the charts, as this was the closest championship fight since 1974.

“I think it was 47 years ago that this championship last went to a race where drivers were tied on points. I don’t think even a Hollywood scriptwriter could have come up with the ins and outs of this year,Horner said.

Horner also commented on the popularity of the sport and how much it has increased in 2021.

“And Formula 1’s popularity, as we’ve seen, has gone through the roof. He’s probably got the biggest sporting event in the world this year as the finale. And the amount of new fans that we’ve welcomed into the sport has been astounding, phenomenal,” said Christian.

Formula One has really become a global spectacle now as over 400,000 fans visited the US GP race weekend. The excitement and the buzz surrounding the season finale also surpassed every expectation. Let’s hope that the sport can continue to deliver and become as popular a sport as any.
