Recent reports suggest Ferrari are making a few structural changes to their 2021 car’s engine. Seemingly, the new power units would add some extra bit of horsepower, which is indeed a positive sign.

Speaking in an interview, Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr. Helmut Marko stated that he believes the Prancing Horse would challenge for third in the Constructors’ standings. He also thinks the team are now ‘newly motivated’ ahead of the 2021 F1 season.

Ferrari have made significant strides with regards to their engine, says Marko

Marko stated, “As you can hear, they made a significant leap on the engine side. I think they got over the shock of last season when they were 50 hp behind.” (translated via Google Translate)

“They are now newly motivated. It wasn’t a good thing with Vettel and the team leadership There is more agreement. Well, the chances that they will compete for third place in the constructors’ championship are certainly there.”

In an already packed midfield battle, Ferrari’s introduction with their new engine will certainly spark some more competition. Considering the unreliability of the SF1000 last year, the Italian motorsport giants will hope that their SF21 car is more up to speed with the drivers’ requirements.

Gradual steps are the key to Ferrari’s resurgence back to the top of the table

The 2020 season car proved to be the slowest in relative measure to their nearest rivals such as Racing Point, McLaren and Renault. Despite getting into some good track positions during the races, their opponents could easily overtake them in wheel-to-wheel combats.

Naturally, Ferrari will not have any satisfaction in their current position and intend to rise back up alongside Mercedes. For that to happen, however, the rebuilding process would need to take place gradually, setting realistic and achievable objectives along the way.

Therefore, in 2021, the ‘Red Team’ needs to focus on establishing their control in the midfield by finishing third. With the consequent passage of time over the next few years, they might then also become title contenders, going forward.
