Formula 1 is known to be a male-dominated sport, with no female driver currently on the grid. In the past, there have been five female drivers that have entered a Grand Prix, out of which only two have ever qualified and raced. Lella Lombardi was the most formidable female driver, with 17 entries and 12 starts. While she took part in the 12 Grand Prix, she did not manage to score a win, while on the other hand, Desiré Wilson is the only female F1 racer to win a race despite it being a national event.

However, gone are those times, and the last lady to drive in F1 was Giovanna Amati, who raced for Brabham in 1992. Over the last 3 decades, there has been no female driver in Formula 1, and this could be a reason why most women don’t like the idea of motorsports. To change this view, Susie Wolff and Reese Witherspoon are teaming up to release a docuseries about the women in the F1 academy.

After the success of Drive to Survive, it looks like the F1 community understands the importance of being in the public eye. Now, to promote more females in racing, the former test driver Susie Wolff decided to put together a docuseries for the women in the F1 academy to make racing an attractive career for women too.

Explaining her motive behind the docuseries, Wolff stated, “We want to be the rocket fuel that drives female participation in our sport, both on and off the track. To have the F1 ACADEMY docuseries launch globally with Netflix is not just a huge step forward in visibility for our mission, but also a resounding statement about the momentum and demand for women’s sport.

Wolff continued to explain, “We want to inspire and empower the next generation of young women, and Netflix will open up F1 ACADEMY to a global audience of existing and future fans.” Along with her, Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, will be involved with the project.

What does Reese Witherspoon think about women in F1?

This project means a lot to Susie Wolff, who spent her whole life around the tracks, but the Hollywood star has also gotten into the project to help inspire women to do as they wish while ignoring the stigma that comes from females doing something that’s conventionally known as a ‘guy thing.’

Witherspoon told F1, “We started Hello Sunshine to change the narrative for women, and Susie Wolff and F1 ACADEMY are doing just that by creating new opportunities in the thrilling world of motorsport.” This is a strong attempt to bring more women into motorsports, as Formula 1 does not discriminate between women and men when it comes to being a race car driver.

She broke down her mission, saying, “As these dynamic and fearless drivers break barriers behind the wheel, we are excited to partner with Netflix to tell the stories of these powerhouse leaders. What we know is that when we put women at the center, people show up to watch.”

That being said, are you excited to see what the women in the F1 academy are up to, and when they will be ready to race in the most competitive motorsport known to humans? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
