Without a doubt, the Red Bull team are serious about challenging Mercedes for the title this year. This explains why the Austrian team are resorting to recruit a number of specialists, especially from the Mercedes team. Most of these employees have been working in the racing engine construction department. Among the new recruits is Andy Cowell’s highest-ranking engineer.

According to reports, Red Bull plan to build a factory by 2022. The idea is for Red Bull to build its own engines from 2025. This would definitely tide the team over until a new manufacturer decided to come knocking. Needless to say, the four-time champions would happily welcome them with open arms.

Admittedly, this is not the first time that the outfit have snapped up a key Mercedes team member. Apparently, the team roped in Mercedes’ head of mechanical engineering, Ben Hodgkinson. His primary role is to lead the newly developed powertrains division.

Admittedly, Hodgkinson’s departure has left the German giants reeling a little bit. This is largely because no one from Mercedes have ever jumped ship to join other rival teams in almost a decade. It also does not help matters that the Austrian team have even offered some enticing prospects.

While both factories are important, the various absences at Brixworth will definitely hurt the team. For now, both outfits are focusing on the current Formula One season before they can actually turn their thoughts to 2022 and beyond.
