Although Ferrari endured a disappointing 2020, they have changed their fortunes this season. Many thought they would struggle just like last year, since the induction of new technical regulations got postponed. However, the Italian outfit are directly competing with McLaren for third place in the constructors’ championship.

With eight races to go, there has been excitement surrounding their new power unit. According to a recent report, Ferrari will fit that power unit in Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s cars in the Turkish Grand Prix.

Ferrari to fit new power unit in next month’s Turkish GP

Over the years, the Italian outfit carved a reputation of producing F1 cars with excellent straight-line speed. However, last year’s car struggled with aerodynamic issues, which limited their potential for straight-line speed.

In addition, their power unit seemed far off Mercedes in terms of output. In fact, this year’s race in Monza saw Leclerc and Sainz struggle to keep up with McLaren, who use Mercedes power units, on the long straights.

With the Ferrari duo already using three power units, they will incur penalties when the fourth one gets installed. And according to Motorsport, this could happen in Istanbul next month. When asked why the power unit couldn’t make it to Monza, team principal Mattia Binotto admitted it wasn’t ready in time.

What will the new power unit add to the SF21?

The new power unit will see multiple new aspects take shape. With new lubricants and gasoline supplied by long-time partners Shell, the Italian outfit look to improve combustion chamber performance.

The new power unit will also see new hybrid system components to replace some out-of-date components currently on the car. Overall, Ferrari look to gain 10 horsepower from these improvements.

Although the team are focused on 2022, they will hope the new power unit keeps them near McLaren in the races that remain this year. With grid penalties in order for Leclerc and Sainz, can the Maranello-based outfit finish third this season? Only time will tell.
