The Briton drove for the Woking-based team for 6 years and won his maiden title with them in 2008. Hamilton’s move to Mercedes was criticized by many at the time as Mercedes was just a midfield team and Mclaren had already won multiple champions till then. As people saw it as a downgrade and a bad move, Red Bull boss Christian Horner came out to praise Hamilton and warn McLaren.
In an old interview from 2013, Horner told the Woking-based constructors that Hamilton’s move was a big blow to them. He said, “I think McLaren is a weaker team without Lewis. I think McLaren would admit that. Lewis is an outstanding driver and in Lewis and Jenson they had a hugely strong driver line-up.”
