Lewis Hamilton received the greatest shock at Sochi on Sunday. The FIA handed a 10-second penalty to the Briton on grounds of the practice start track limit violations.

Hamilton claims that the FIA had not penalized him earlier on such grounds. It is strange that no one noticed them earlier, even though the racer claims he did it several times earlier.

Steward jury member Mika Salo dismisses claims of a Lewis Hamilton witchhunt

Lewis Hamilton was on the verge of equaling Schumacher’s record of 91 race wins. However, the 5+5 penalty stopped the racer from achieving that. He lost his lead to teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The Briton accused the stewards of trying to stop him. However, Mika Salo, from the race jury, disagreed with the Briton completely. He further shared his ideas on the affair, clarifying that the board is unbiased.

Full of sh*t. This is by no means true. Everyone has the same rules,” Salo told Ilta Sanomat.

The former racer also elaborated on the points where Lewis Hamilton had erred. The confusion that got the Briton scratching his head was, why was it never pointed out before.

It’s pretty clear. Hamilton did his starts from the side of the track and twice more. Hamilton made his last practice start at the white line that almost ends the pit lane exit.

That would have explained the case. However, a 10-second penalty was too harsh in the context.

Penalty demoralized Hamilton

Hamilton was aware of the FIA trying to trick him. However, he hadn’t expected such a harsh step from the same jury that let Charles Leclerc off the hook for Lance Stroll’s race.

He expressed,” I need to go back and see what the rules are; I need to see exactly what I did wrong. I’m pretty sure nobody has got two five-second penalties for something so ridiculous before.”

The step turned out to be the most controversial decision in 2020 so far. Several drivers like Verstappen addressed the topic and sympathized with Lewis.

Lewis Hamilton on the contrary was in disbelief and shock. His podium celebration lacked energy, his post-race interview lacked the spirit. The champion seemed lost in his delusion.

Meanwhile, Team Principal Toto Wolff had been verbose about Lewis being wronged. He had also approached the jury when the penalty came in. However, the decision rendered to him was rather incomprehensive.

He concluded that the team needs to be more cautious next time onwards and effectively err on the side of caution.
