Carlos Sainz has had a bit of a journeyman career in F1. He has been bouncing around from one team to another, the 26-year-old having driven for the likes of Toro Rosso, Renault, and McLaren already across a six-year spell. But he wants to form a long-term relationship with his new team, Ferrari ahead of his seventh F1 season.
And that may have been the motivation behind his decision to sign a multi-year deal with them. Along with his impressive spell at McLaren, which earned him a race seat with Ferrari. The Spaniard performed impressively with the working outfit in 2019.
But it was still incomparable to the performance leap Sainz took together with them in 2020. That was down to him having a stable working environment with them.
” [Stability] is also my target with Ferrari and why I signed a two-year deal with them,” he explained last year in an interview which included GP fans.
“As long as we are happy with each other, I want that to be the new tendency in my contracts, not just one year like I was with Renault not knowing what was going to happen. If there is one thing I’ve learned in McLaren, it is how important it is to be more than one year in a team to extract the maximum potential of that car and the people that are next to you.”
Despite bagging a multi-year deal with the Prancing Horse, he would not want to rest on his laurels. For the team is a high-functioning pressure cooker that can chew and spit drivers out like chewing gum. He acknowledges that –
“Pressure in Ferrari is always high. It doesn’t matter about the number of years on the contract, and I’m the first one that is wanting to be as fast as possible out of the box.”
He won’t have it easy either, as he would be going up against Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque outperformed Sebastian Vettel in both of his seasons with Ferrari. So, he knows that he will need to be on his toes should he wish to achieve some success with them.
