It seems unlikely that Sebastian Vettel will be out of the headlines anytime soon. The 4-time world champion’s name has been on everyone’s lips since he left Ferrari a couple of weeks ago. Most of the talk since then has been about which team would Vettel move to for 2021.

“Sebastian Vettel would have had to make sacrifices”- Ferrari

Ferrari headquarters issued a statement about Vettel that said,” We would have had to ask him to make sacrifices in 2021 that would have been hard for him to accept.”

The sacrifices that Ferrari are referring to are mostly regarding Vettel’s position in the team and his salary. It became pretty evident by the end of the last year that Charles Leclerc was going to be Ferrari’s new number 1.

The young and impressive Monegasque was rewarded with a 5-year contract. That seemed to make it pretty clear to Vettel about what Ferrari’s new plan would be. Additionally, Ferrari already started making contacts with Carlos Sainz in January. A clear indication that Ferrari weren’t going to live with the headache of having two number 1 drivers.

Plus, the fact that having a clear number 1 and 2 worked wonders for Mercedes and Red Bull, wouldn’t have helped Vettel’s cause.

To make matter’s worse for Vettel, came the COVID-19 pandemic. For a big team like Ferrari, they would need to cut a massive number of jobs to adhere to the new rules. That also means reducing Vettel’s salary and effectively labelling him a certain number 2.

The fact that all of this happened pretty much around the same time, spelt the end for the German’s career at Ferrari.

That currently leaves Vettel with no contract thus far. The chances of him going to a championship-winning team are also looking slim. It is going to be testing times ahead for the German.
