Sebastian Vettel has revealed the decision taken by him when a golden opportunity recently came his way. The decision was taken along the same lines as to why he decided to retire from F1. The four-time world champion explains why and under what circumstances the decision was made when Aston Martin came knocking on the door with a request to make an F1 comeback.

Lance Stroll met with a cycling accident before the 2023 pre-season Bahrain testing. The accident resulted in the Canadian fracturing both his wrists and his right foot toe. Up until a day before the 2023 Bahrain GP, it was still unsure whether Stroll would be able to race during the weekend. Mike Krack recently revealed that they were ready to substitute the Canadian in case he wasn’t able to make it in time. He also explained how Aston Martin was tempted to call Sebastian Vettel up in case Stroll didn’t make it but refrained from it anyways due to the respect for Vettel’s decision to spend more time with family.

Sebastian Vettel recently explained during an interview with sport.sky.de how he was not aware of stroll’s injury at the time of the Canadian’s accident. The German wasn’t at home when it happened and was traveling in his van. Regardless, the four-time world champion messaged Stroll a speedy recovery as soon as he was informed. Vettel also revealed that never really knew that the consequence of the accident could be him stepping up for Aston Martin. The German also received a message from Mike Krack and they talked for a little while. but replacing Stroll for the time being was never really an option.

The rumor of Vettel stepping up for Stroll made the F1 fan’s eyes sparkle as they would’ve experienced the pleasure of seeing the four-time champion in a competitive car once again. And not to overlook, him partnering up with his once arch-rival Fernando Alonso. However, Aston Martin is now reaping the benefits of the seeds that were sown with German in the previous year.

How did Sebastian Vettel help Aston Martin reach where they are now?

A driver’s feedback is the most important thing for the team to co-relate the data with the actual performance. Sebastian Vettel had already won four world titles when he joined Aston Martin and was amongst the most experienced drivers on the grid. The German would’ve provided invaluable feedback last year which went into developing the AMR23. Mike Krack suggests Vettel helped the team in a lot of areas and with the progress of the AMR23.

He brought us up in a lot of areas, where we have learned a lot and progressed a lot.” further adding “He has certainly [played] his part in where we are now”
