Sebastian Vettel is a 4-time World Champion. All four of those titles came during his six-year-stint at Red Bull. Now that he is about to end his career at Aston Martin, the German has revealed how strong his chances of rejoining Red Bull were in 2021.

Dark clouds of uncertainty loomed over his career when he decided to part ways with Ferrari at the end of 2020. Some rumors suggested that Seb might return to Red Bull in 2021. Another experienced driver who was searching for a seat in 2021 was Sergio Perez. But as fate would have it, Seb replaced ‘Checo’ (Perez) at Aston Martin (then known as Racing Point) and Checo landed at Red Bull.

The whole 2021 drivers’ transfer saga began when Red Bull decided not to renew Alex Albon’s contract and demote him to a reserve driver. Checo could not renew his contract at Racing Point, either. Vettel, who was driving for Ferrari, ran out of his contract at the end of the season, too. While some rumors suggested that he might take a year off, others pointed towards a Red Bull return.

Speaking on the subject with Motorsport.com, Vettel expressed that he had decided to join Aston Martin even before Albon’s exit discussions began at Red Bull.

However, he revealed that while he did have a chat with Helmut Marko and Christian Horner, he was never really close to returning to Red Bull. He said, “so it was never really close. But of course, I know, Christian, I know Helmut. So for sure, I had a brief chat with them, but never really anything serious.”

Reflecting on his two years with Aston Martin, he said that although they expected to be more competitive, he has no regrets. The 35-year-old said that he is happy with the way things have progressed, but admitted that it has been a challenge, racing in the positions he is in.
