Sebastian Vettel’s move to Aston Martin for 2021 came at the cost of Sergio Perez. As a result, the Mexican now finds himself on the outside looking in for next season. With only a few seats still available, Vettel gives his take on Checo’s future.

At the drivers’ press conference ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix, the 4-time World Champion saw a prickly question thrown his way. He was asked whether he regrets being the reason for Perez not having a drive for next year.

The current Ferrari man skirted around the question and replied, “Obviously, there are not that many seats open still. I don’t know if Checo is talking to anyone. You guys are making the news, so you know more than me. Or (you will) know sooner than me.”

Although nothing has been confirmed so far, there have been rumors linking Checo to Haas. The American-based team are said to be on the lookout for a new driver pairing in 2021. Perez would definitely give the team loads of experience and good, consistent performances.

Vettel admitted that it would be a loss for the sport if Perez is left high and dry for next season. He said, “It would be a shame. He’s a driver that deserves to be in Formula 1. I don’t know which options he has and what he wants to do. But yeah…”

The Mexican’s realistic options so far are Haas, Alfa Romeo, and AlphaTauri. As mentioned earlier, Haas seem to be the leading contender in the race for Perez’s onboarding.

However, with the emergence of the next generation of racers from F2 (specifically Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman), Checo’s chances are on thin ice.

Alfa Romeo are more likely to sign young F2 star Mick Schumacher or perhaps even Perez’s former teammate Nico Hulkenberg.

AlphaTauri could be an interesting option and perhaps the best from Checo’s point of view, especially if he wants to compete in the thick of the midfield battle. But there are no indications of them wanting Perez.

Will Perez find a drive for next year? Would he switch to another form of motorsport? Keep an eye out, as the transfer mill will kick into gear just soon as we enter the latter half of the season, beginning with the Eifel Grand Prix on the 11th of October.
