A prominent name who may or may not remain in Formula 1 next season is Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver was absolutely outstanding in the Russian Grand Prix.

It was the sort of drive that earned him praise and cheers from pundits and fans alike. But at the same time, a cloud of gloom hovers over him potentially not staying in the sport next season.

Amidst him performing on the track, there are certainly negotiations taking place behind the scenes. If not close to guaranteeing a seat, some teams would have made contact to gauge Perez’s interest and ambitions.

Sergio Perez himself is not a hurry to decide his future

But with seven races still to come, Sergio Perez probably is reserving all his energy efforts in giving it his all with Racing Point. Checo believes that there is no urgent need per se to come to an immediate conclusion regarding his future.

He is quoted as saying, “Who knows really, nothing is signed yet. But definitely there has been some progress so we will see in the coming weeks. As I said before, I think at this stage no one is in any hurry, not the teams, not myself. So let’s wait still. [There’s] a long way to go.”

Perez once again showed why he is an experienced and reliable campaigner in Sochi. On a day where Lance Stroll crashed, Racing Point’s hope for points rested entirely on the Mexican; he did not disappoint, bringing home an impressive P4 finish and keeping the team in third in the Constructors’ Standings.

Perez will use future races as an opportunity

Although without a seat for 2021, the forthcoming races in challenging tracks could be interesting for Perez. It could be yet another conviction point for teams that Checo can be their lead driver.

Alfa Romeo would be a good option. That is considering Perez spent some years during their Sauber F1 era. Haas have been on the lookout for new drivers, but their Team Principal Guenther Steiner has a shortlist of ‘many names’.

A Perez-Red Bull combination is not completely out of the window either. The Mexican has his best years ahead of him, Red Bull want to get closer to Mercedes.

But despite what Perez tells the media, he will want to resolve his future at the earliest. For the time being, however, his focus will lie solely on the race at Nurburgring on October 11th.
