The news that Sebastian Vettel was set to join Aston Martin for 2021, filled nearly every F1 fan with great joy. Unfortunately, however, it came at the cost of a painful departure for Sergio Perez. The Mexican had put out a heartwarming goodbye message about 12 hours before the Vettel news broke through.

The Vettel to Aston Martin rumors had been there for a long time. But the rumors had cooled down in recent weeks while Racing Point continued to maintain a stance that suggested no upheaval in their current driver lineup heading into 2021.

But all of a sudden, the F1 world received a massive surprise (shock?) as Vettel put pen to paper on the Aston Martin deal. Amidst all the jubilation for Vettel and his fans, there was massive disappointment for Checo. He only got wind of Racing Point’s decision mere hours before Vettel signed.

Reacting to the whirlwind changes, a dejected Perez said, “I received confirmation yesterday. No one told me anything. It’s fine. Seven years with the team.”

He further added (translated by Google), “The feedback I had was that the team wanted me to stay. Some discussions of the contract progressed. But I will not reveal them and yesterday they gave me the news that he (I) would not continue, despite that.”

Perez said, “Probably a bit more clarity would have helped regarding my future as well. Because then I would have looked at a Plan B.

However, he felt that such surprises and shocks are to be expected in the sport that he is in. “I’ve been long enough in this business. It’s part of this crazy world called F1,” said Checo.

The treatment dished out to Perez, for a team he has long raced for, would have come as a gut punch. It bears an eerie similarity to what happened to Vettel himself at Ferrari and how he too was suddenly informed of such a huge decision.

You got to feel sad for the Mexican. Truth be told, he hasn’t done too much wrong and has always delivered consistently solid, if unspectacular, performances.

Sure, Vettel being a 4-times world champion is an upgrade on Checo. But surely the Mexican deserved a much better send-off.

Now, all of a sudden, Perez finds himself in the exact same predicament that Vettel was in not too long ago. Where does Checo go from here? Will he continue in F1? Or will he pursue a new career altogether? Stay tuned to find out.
