Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, despite being the two most experienced drivers on the grid, share the weirdest relationship. They may both be in the twilight of their F1 careers, but the hunger to win the championship one more time is equal. Despite sharing the same goals, the duo often take digs at each other. On other occasions, they have nothing but praise. Alonso was in the mood for the latter recently, however, fans have refused to fall into his trap this time.

Alonso and Hamilton’s relationship began as teammates when the Briton made his debut in 2007. Hamilton joined McLaren as a rookie while Alonso joined the team after winning two back-to-back championships with Renault. It was a rocky start right from the beginning as neither driver conceded their position on the track. Resultantly, they both finished the season with the same number of points, losing out on the championship by just one. Alonso left the team after that season.

Ahead of the start of the Australian GP weekend, Alonso dissed Hamilton by dubbing him as a driver who struggles in a “normal car”. He talked about how Hamilton had an excellent record when it came to his dominant Mercedes days when he had no competition. Even his teammate couldn’t challenge him most of the time. However, since Mercedes started to struggle, George Russell beat him on points.

The Spaniard has now changed his tone once again, praising him for making the most out of a slow Mercedes car. He even called him a title contender who will pounce on the first opportunity that could present itself in the coming years.

Speaking with PA News Agency, Alonso said, “Lewis will be in contention for the eighth title. I don’t know if that will be next year, or in the future, but he will have another chance of winning the championship, that is for sure.”

“Mercedes are a very strong team, and Lewis is a very strong driver. He doesn’t forget how to drive from one season to the next. The Mercedes car is not an easy one to drive and it is not a fast car, but you see every weekend that Lewis is always there – fourth, fifth, fourth, and he was second in Australia. He is driving on top of the car.”

Fans, however, refuse to believe him this time around and believe Alonso could change his statement anytime he feels like it. Take a look at some reactions to his comments on Twitter.
