Back in late 2016, Nico Rosberg stepped away from Formula One after winning the title. In response, Mercedes recruited Valtteri Bottas in his stead from the Williams F1 team. After some early struggles, the Finn is confident that he can challenge Lewis Hamilton for the 2020 F1 world championship.
Ever since he joined in 2017, Bottas has had to play second fiddle to his teammate every year. The good news for him is that his performance has improved steadily and the gap between them has shrunk.
Now, the 30-year old is itching to kick-start the new campaign and challenge his teammate. According to the Mercedes driver, he has improved and believe that he is now on the right path.

What did Valtteri Bottas say?
Speaking to The Race, he declared that at the end of each year, he strives to improve himself, no matter where he finishes. However, he confessed that the road is difficult and is riddled with obstacles.
In spite of this, it is up to the driver to surpass the obstacles and turn weaknesses into strengths. He said, “I think now, within myself, how things are in my life, and then also in terms of my driving and how we are working with a team, we’ve definitely found the right path, and I really feel good improvements at the moment.”

“Since a kid, I’ve had this target in my career to be a world champion. And obviously I still haven’t achieved it. So that keeps me going, and that keeps me motivated.”
Bottas enjoyed one of his strongest seasons in 2019, and even challenged Hamilton in the first half of the year. While he did falter a little in the latter stages, he did enough to stay in 2nd place in the championship. In 2020 though, Valtteri Bottas is determined to fight even harder and make his partner truly work for that title.
