After imposing its utter dominance in the first three races, Red Bull continued the impeccable run in Azerbaijan. Once again, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were each other’s only competition, and that is bothering Toto Wolff. The Mercedes boss urged the FIA to take action to deliver on its promise of leveling the playing field. However, that hasn’t gone down too well for a former driver turned Sky Sports expert.
Shortly after the conclusion of the race in Jeddah, Lewis Hamilton pointed to a peculiar problem. He talked about overtaking becoming more difficult. Later, Carlos Sainz and teams like Haas echoed that sentiment, citing an uptick in “dirty air” from the cars ahead. That makes it difficult not just to overtake but also to tailgate the car ahead. The race in Baku exposed the problem further and, according to Wolff, was the reason why he found it to be “not great entertainment”.

Before Red Bull’s newfound glory days, Mercedes dominated the sport undisputed for 8 long years. The Silver Arrows won the constructors’ championship every year between 2014 and 2021. In that period, they also won 7 driver’s titles. Hamilton won 6 of those, while Nico Rosberg won his in 2016 and retired on a career-high.
Didn’t hear much pleading when Rosberg won the utter snoozefest in 2016…..? https://t.co/htPKLZP0m5

That was the year when Hamilton and Rosberg were each other’s only competition. Much like how Max and Checo are now. Karun Chandhok reminded Toto of those days in his recent Tweet in response to his comments. Chandhok wrote, “Didn’t hear much pleading when Rosberg won the utter snoozefest in 2016…..?”
Toto also spoke against the shortening of DRS zones on the straights in Baku which he felt contributed to the race becoming a dull affair.
How Toto reacted to the race in Azerbaijan
After Lewis delivered the first podium finish for the team in Australia, the outing in Baku turned out to be a disappointing one for Mercedes. The Briton finished the race in P6 while George Russell could only manage P8. Russell, however, had a satisfactory outing on Saturday as he finished the Sprint in P4 after putting up a good fight against Verstappen.
Metro UK quoted Toto as saying post-race, “Today wasn’t a thriller.”

“Just no overtaking. It made it not great entertainment. It needs the tough battles, and I think the highlight [in the sprint] was George [Russell] and Max [Verstappen] being able to battle it out.”
“There was none of that in the main race. Even if you are within 0.2 of a second, it is nearly impossible to overtake unless the other driver makes a mistake. We need to really look at it, we need to look at how we can avoid just a boring race.”
