Nearly two weeks have gone by since Daniel Ricciardo was confirmed to have gotten a drive at McLaren for 2021. That leaves a spot at Renault open for the 2021 season. So the big question that everyone at Renault would want to address, would be the driver that partners Esteban Ocon for 2021. The biggest name among drivers out of contract for 2021 would be Lewis Hamilton, the 6-time world champion. Now, hold your horses Renault fans. Ferrari has already locked its driver grid for 2021. Also, It seems highly unlikely that Lewis would leave Mercedes for Redbull.

So who else could possibly (realistically) partner Ocon for the Renault drive in 2021? Martin Brundle, the former F1 driver now turned commentator, speaking to Sky Sports said,” If I was Renault, I would go for (they have got Ocon) a young guy. Maybe, after Leclerc,(somebody new) will have emerged by then, maybe George Russell will be in the marketplace. Somebody of that ilk.”

Martin Brundle also said that he expects more changes in regards to driver lineups for 2021. He further stated that the future of F1 is going to be all about young drivers. He recounted the likes of Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Lando Norris, and Alex Albon. Martin Brundle also gave a mention to Lewis Hamilton’s contract situation.

What should be a priority for Renault?

The reliability problems that the Renault team faced in the 2019 season are well documented and as such, they would have been looking to improve their cars for the upcoming F1 season.

In my previous article, Renault’s F1 team principal, Cyril Abiteboul touched on the topic of having a better car to attract other drivers on the grid towards Renault. Martin Brundle echoed the same sentiment, he said,” They (Renault) should go and spend the 20-25 million Euros on infrastructure and make the car faster for the future.”

Clearly, it looks like the Renault team have got their priorities straight. They now know what to do so as to improve for the upcoming season as well as attract drivers for the 2021 season.
