Fernando Alonso is currently experiencing the most incredible resurgence in his Formula 1 career. From struggling with mid-table teams to driving a highly competitive Aston Martin car, Alonso is right where he should be. At the front of the grid fighting for podiums. However, despite securing four podiums in the first five races, the Spaniard is not satisfied. Alonso wants to take his AMR23 a couple of places higher on the grid and end his 10-year drought.
From the very start of the season, the Spaniard has made his ambitions clear with Aston Martin. Luckily for him, Aston Martin provided him with machinery that can fulfill his championship-winning desire. However, the Spaniard wants to start by winning a race ahead of the superior Red Bulls first, something he expressed to Speed Cafe.

“At the beginning of the year a podium was amazing,” confessed Alonso. “Now, after four podiums, we obviously want more, at least a second place, but the two Red Bulls are always unbreakable and they are always super-fast.”

However, Alonso is still patiently and intently waiting for an opportunity to pounce for a win. “Obviously, we want to step higher on the podium for P2, and eventually one day we have an opportunity to win a race. If one day there is a crack, if there is an opportunity, we need to make sure we are in that position and we’re still not making mistakes at any point in the weekend.”

Despite wanting to end his 10-year drought, Fernando Alonso is still focused on the end goal
The Spaniard won two successive championships with Renault and has failed to challenge for one since then, except in 2007. Almost 16 years later, there is renewed hope. Even though Alonso needs a race win, it will be a mere stepping stone toward his ultimate goal of winning the championship.

“A 100th podium? A 33rd victory? No, I’m going for a world championship,” said Alonso. “We have huge changes coming to the car. So far everything that has been announced to me by the technical team has materialized. If these developments bring the hoped-for gains, it will be normal to aim high.”
