The Qualifying session for the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was nothing less than a spectacle. The streets of Baku Street saw the 20 Formula 1 cars take to the track for Qualifying on a Friday, after just one session of Free Practice. Naturally, there was chaos. After a bevy of red flags and a few surprises, we saw Charles Leclerc grab a superb pole position. But amongst all this, Lewis Hamilton and teammate George Russell got caught up in an unexpected controversy.

In Q2, Russell got unexpectedly knocked out, as his teammate out-qualified the young Brit. And while Russell was eliminated, Australian rookie, Oscar Piastri, made the jump to Q3. However, on second glance, while Russell was struggling for lap time, his teammate Hamilton gave Piastri a wealthy tow that shaved a few tenths off of Piastri’s time. This is where Sky Sports F1’s Karun Chandhok had a thing or two to say about the 7x champion.
