In the chess game that is Formula 1, sometimes the whispers off the track can be as captivating as the roar on it. Such is the case with the rumored Ferrari contract offer for Lewis Hamilton, which surely added another $49,000,000 wrinkle to the already intense Mercedes-Ferrari rivalry. While Red Bull’s beastly RB19 has been lapping up wins, with Verstappen and Perez seizing an impressive 14 consecutive victories (barring that tiny hiccup in Singapore thanks to Sainz’s win for Ferrari), the real drama is unfolding behind.

Mercedes and Ferrari have been at loggerheads for that coveted second spot. The gap has been tantalizingly closing for the last four races. From a seemingly comfortable +56 lead, Mercedes now finds itself just +20 ahead of Ferrari, with Leclerc and Sainz showing no signs of hitting the brakes. But Mercedes’ team boss, Toto Wolff, isn’t one to back down from a challenge, nor let Fred Vasseur forget what’s at stake.

Recounting the different challenges posed by tracks like Singapore and Japan, Wolff emphasized how crucial it was to hold ground against Ferrari. “We knew that our pace in Japan would not be up to that shown in Singapore: they were two very different tracks and the characteristics of Suzuka highlighted the weaknesses of the W14. It was therefore important to limit the damage to Ferrari in the constructors’ classification. With six races remaining in the championship, we can’t wait to fight and we will give our all to stay ahead, starting next weekend in Qatar,” Wolff stated, with a hint of nostalgia as he recalled the curves of Lusail circuit, where Mercedes had tasted success in 2021.

His words were filled with a mix of anticipation and a silent dare. “With its track changes and a Sprint weekend ahead, it’s going to be an interesting showdown in Qatar. Let’s see who gets their setup right. We’re all in, starting this weekend.

“I think, obviously, when Lewis and Toto were acquainted, Lewis was already World Champion, he was already this megastar,” Russell quipped.

Elaborating on the contrast, George said, “There was perhaps really more respect [from] Toto to Lewis when he joined because Toto was completely new to Formula 1 at that time, Toto was the rookie and Lewis was the household massive name.”

George’s initiation into the Mercedes fold came much younger. “Toto signed to me as a 16-year-old. They’ve always, I guess, nurtured me along my way, advised me, helped me reach my full potential…” he mused.

“So, you know, he’s my boss, but he’s also a friend.”
