An impressive performance by Racing Point, at the Styrian Grand Prix, was overshadowed when Renault launched a protest against them.
The reason for the protest from Renault’s side was the use of brake ducts on the RP20, which was allegedly derived from a design by Mercedes.

This goes against the sporting regulations designed by the FIA. Appendix 6 within the said regulations states, “A competitor shall, in respect of the Listed Parts to be used in its cars in Formula One, only use Listed Parts which are designed by it.”
As a result of Renault’s complaint, the FIA stewards have accepted the protest and will be investigating it. However, Racing Point claims that Renault are misinformed.
Racing Point refutes the basis of Renault’s protests, claims FIA were well informed about its car design
In a statement made to Motorsport.com, Racing Point said, “BWT Racing Point F1 Team is extremely disappointed to see its results in the Styrian Grand Prix questioned by what it considers to be a misconceived and poorly informed protest.
“Any and all suggestion of wrongdoings is firmly rejected. The team will take all steps necessary to ensure the correct application of the regulation to the facts.”
The Silverstone-based outfit also claims that the FIA was well informed about its car design for this year. They state, “Prior to the start of the season, the team cooperated with the FIA and satisfactorily addressed all questions regarding the origins of the designs of the RP20. The team is confident that the protest will be dismissed once it has presented its response.”
Nevertheless, don’t turn a blind eye towards the pink team’s performance in Styria. Despite severely struggling on Saturday’s wet qualifying session, the team bounced back brilliantly on Sunday.
Sergio Perez who started the race in P17 flew up the grid and ended the race in P6. He looked destined to finish P4 but sustained a damaged front wing in a battle against Red Bull’s Alex Albon.
He limped towards the finish line and was lucky to finish ahead of Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo who were right on his tail.
His teammate Lance Stroll who started the race in 13th place also rose up the grid quickly. The Canadian driver crossed the checkered flag in P6.
The RP20 is certainly looking like a dangerous prospect this season. Their aim would certainly be to secure the ‘best of the rest’ title, ahead of rivals McLaren and Renault.
