Hamilton on equalling Michael Schumacher

With Hamilton gunning for a record-equaling 7th World Championship this season, he opened up on the prospect of matching, possibly F1’s biggest legend.

Lewis Hamilton currently has 84 wins and 6 World Championships in F1. He’s short of equaling the German great by 1 title and 7 victories. However, there’s a strong chance of Hamilton breaking one of those records in 2020.

Yes, Hamilton and Michael raced in era and cars that were light years apart. 2 decades ago, F1 was a completely different sport. As a result, its almost a fool’s errand to sit down and compare the pair’s racing records.

Hamilton recently spoke to Men’s Health and gave his thoughts on equaling the 7 times World Champion. Lewis revealed that he didn’t want to be distracted by the accolades.

Hamilton disclosed that he wasn’t concentrating on the records itself but on getting there. The British driver said he was concentrating on being physically sharper and having the opportunity to drive the best car on the grid.

 “I honestly don’t think about it much. I don’t want it to be a distraction. I’m currently the world champion but, every year, I start from scratch. I just want to be at the top of my game in a physical sense,

“Just as I want my car to be the best in terms of engineering. How can I make sure I’m ahead of everyone else?

How can I be more consistent, meticulous, and precise? [How] can I better understand the technology? That’s what I focus on.

Speaking of staying physically sharper, Hamilton also opened up on his workout routine.

“I like lifting weights, but I have to make sure that I don’t overdo it. Formula 1 drivers can’t be too heavy: more muscle means more kilos”

With the immense G forces of an F1 car, drivers need to keep their heart rate and endurance in check.
