The Circus Eyes New Location As South Africa May Feature on F1 Calendar

Liberty Media, the U.S.-based company, acquired F1 a few years ago and has immediately set out on a path to change the sport. One of its aims was to popularize the sport all over the world. With that in mind, they introduced new venues in recent years and plan to expand it further.
The South African GP was last held back in 1993. And F1 is planning on making a return to the country for the first time in almost 30 years. Reports suggest that F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has traveled to South Africa for talks about a potential return of the Grand Prix next year.

At the same time, the Concorde Agreement signed by F1 states a limit of 24 races. This year sees 22 races, but with Qatar GP and Las Vegas GP added, it could hit the limit in 2023. However, the French Grand Prix and the race in Belgium could suffer the drop to accommodate the South African GP.

Meanwhile, F1’s global director of race promotion, Chloe Targett-Adams, revealed the sport’s plan to further expand and introduce new venues.
F1 reveals their plans to race in Africa and Asia
The massive growth of the sport in the United States has prompted F1 to add new venues in the country. Along with the race in Austin and the newly introduced Miami GP, Las Vegas GP is all set to debut in 2023. Targett-Adams revealed that Asia and Africa are the next target market for F1.

Speaking at the Business of F1 Forum arranged by Motorsport Network and the Financial Times in Monaco, she said, “The US is still very much in our sights. Africa and Asia I think is where we need to be. If you look at China with the way that COVID has happened, we’ve been out of that market for maybe three years. Next year is still a question mark.
“Africa and Asia is the focus I think in the short- to mid-term, and how we race in Europe is also a big question, making sure we keep that heartland of the sport.”

Earlier, Lewis Hamilton also voiced his intention to race in South Africa, stating the country is close to his heart. “The place that I really feel, to my heart, is most important to me is to get a race back in South Africa. I think there is a great following out there and I think it would be great to highlight how beautiful the motherland is,” he conveyed.
The South African GP was famously held in the Kyalami circuit from 1967 to 1985 and it also made a brief return in 1992 and 1993. So, the news of its potential return will excite F1 fans, without a doubt.
