The Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet row has not only shocked the world but it has also brought major consequences for the latter. As we’re all aware, Piquet is accused of using a racist slur to refer to Lewis Hamilton during his 2021 British GP analysis in a Brazilian podcast. And right before the 2022 edition of the race at Silverstone, his comments surfaced, leading him to face major backlash.

As it turns out, the backlash will be the least of Piquet’s troubles after recent developments. The comments made by the former Brazilian driver might earn him criminal repercussions. The repercussions can be as serious as jail time for Piquet after more reports have surfaced of him making homophobic remarks toward Hamilton.

The Brazilian MPs are pushing local prosecutors to put criminal charges on the 69-year-old. And lawyer Renan Gandolfi believes Piquet can face fines or even three years in prison.

Socialist MP Taliria Petrone said, “Treating black human beings in a clearly derogatory way, as Mr Nelson Piquet does, stands in the way of achieving equality.” And added, “Racism, which structures our society, must be fought everywhere.” (Translated by Google)

Too little, too late: Nelson Piquet’s apology for Lewis Hamilton deemed unacceptable

Lord Peter Hain, a Labour Peer and vice-chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Formula 1, deemed the apology issued by Piquet highly unacceptable. He slammed the former world champion for defending himself instead of simply apologizing for his comments.

Hain said, “I was appalled by the comment. It was blatantly racist. It’s no good making excuses about ‘colloquial terms’ and all that. People who make racist remarks should just apologise fully and retract it, and not attempt to explain it away.”
