Toto Wolff Apologizes as Lewis Hamilton Front Row Expectations Take Massive Blow at Hungarian GP

We were all left wondering how did Lewis Hamilton end at P7 during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying? After showing a decent pace, the Briton’s car gave up out of nowhere. While his teammate was on pole position, he suffered bad luck not being able to manage a front-row lockout.
Mercedes were having a really good day with rivals Red Bull’s suffering while the British team also had great pace. Arguably, the W13 was the fastest on the track during qualifying after going for fresher tires during Q3. Earlier, the Brackley outfit suffered during their practice sessions. From the looks of it, it felt they wouldn’t manage anything spectacular during qualifying.

However, both Hamilton and George Russell shocked everyone with surprise provisional poles. Despite that, Hamilton had a bad day after he reported this, “No DRS mate. No DRS…”
While he undoubtedly wanted to push further, the DRS issue simply did not help him.
Hamilton (post-Q3 interview): It's the first time we had a shot at the front row. Our qualifying was genuinely good. I tried on my last lap & the DRS wouldn't open! I was already down 3-4 tenths into Turn 1

Team Boss Toto Wolff did apologize for the mistake and said, “Lewis, sorry about the DRS. The car was strong. Both of you were strong. Both Red Bulls are behind you. Norris-Ocon-Alonso we should get.”

If all goes well, we can expect Hamilton not to hang at the back for too long given his machinery had tremendous pace during Quali. Race, however, will be important with many other drivers to watch out for.

What did Hamilton feel though after the qualifying? He had a very good chance of beating Russell and the Ferrari’s today. The driver indeed looked very strong and was sure of a pole.
He later said, “I was feeling great [in the car]. Front row was definitely there. Would’ve been awesome to get a front row for the team but these things happen.”
