Max Verstappen became the world champion in 2021 for the first time in his career. Many people think this won’t be his last and that he would win it again. However, Toto Wolff would’ve been the last person to admit the same. Especially after last season’s drama. But believe it or not, Toto agrees as well.

Toto Wolff has finally come in agreement with the circumstances in which Max won the championship. And has an understanding outlook towards the whole situation.

Max Verstappen is a deserving world champion

Max won the 2021 season championship in the most dramatic fashion. The title race stretched until the last race and until the very last lap of the race. A scenario we will not forget anytime soon. One of the most dramatic seasons in Formula 1 history ended with a high at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Toto Wolff, however, has finally come to terms with the circumstances under Max won the world championship race.

Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, made a fair few statements in agreement about the whole situation. “Max has been riding strong all season and has also missed a lot of points. He is a deserved world champion.” said Toto. Initially, however, neither Toto nor Lewis Hamilton agreed with the situation and the circumstances in which Max won the world championship.

Toto was in disbelief when the lapped cars, in between Max and Lewis, were allowed to un-lap themselves. Believing it was against the rules, he mentioned the same several times on the radio to the stewards. After several complaints to the authorities and some heated exchange on the radio during the race, the situation calmed down. But Toto did not! Mercedes filed two official complaints against the whole situation.

With the constructors’ title already wrapped up, a win for Lewis would’ve made him an eight-time world champion. A dream scenario for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. He would’ve cemented his claim on the title of the best driver in sport’s history.

But the dream scenario remained just that. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen lifted the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix trophy and subsequently the world championship, as well.

Acceptance followed by appreciation

Toto Wolff has now come to terms with the situation and agrees he would’ve done the same. “If the situation had been reversed, we would have claimed the trophy too and we would have been happy too.” Claims the Mercedes boss.

It’s good to know Toto has moved on from the situation and made his peace with it. He even appreciated Max’s driving, which nobody can take away from him. Hopefully, though, the acceptance has come as a renewed focus on this season’s championship run, as the 2022 Formula 1 has only just begun.

Will Mercedes make it nine times in a row as a constructor champion? And will Lewis finally get his eighth world championship? We are yet to find out!
