After a controversial Abu Dhabi finale, the dust doesn’t seem to settle between the Mercedes team and the FIA. Last lap decisions by the racing committee cost Lewis Hamilton his record 8th title, inadvertently helping Max Verstappen win his first. The conversation that started about the validity of those decisions continues even today. Toto Wolff has been openly critical of the FIA urging them to make structural amends.

Lewis Hamilton graciously accepted the defeat after the race, but it has affected the Briton immensely. He has been away from the social media glare since then, with just two public appearances. Wolff and Hamilton also famously deserved the FIA prize-giving gala held in Paris, giving rise to uncertainties over Hamilton’s future course in F1.

One man who has been in the firing line is race director Michael Masi. A sizeable chunk of F1 fans wants him gone while many lauded his decision-making under a high-pressure situation. After a month of heated debate over this matter, FIA announced they will launch an official review of the matter.

However, the timeline has now upset many as FIA will release the finding in March, right before the Bahrain GP, as many believe Hamilton’s decision to return would be based on the findings of this review.

Toto Wolff lashed out at the FIA

More recently, in an interview reported by FormulaPassion, Wolff has launched the war of words all the way again. Many believe he is trying to put pressure on the topmost body to take a stand sooner than later. In his recent conversation with the German motorsports website Auto Motor und Sport, he urged the FIA to act on the matter rather than giving constant clarifications.

“We can try, together with the FIA, to do better in the future. But I expect deeds, not just words. We can’t freestyle like that with the regulation, in a sport that should just be a sport. There must be clarity on the rules before the start of the new season, so that every driver, every team, every fan knows what is allowed and what is not,” said Wolff as reported by FormulaPassion.

“In the end, we are here to give entertainment, but no decision should break the rules, for the sake of the show,” concluded Wolff.
