Ferrari moves to check, but Toto Wolff and Mercedes jump to control the damage—this is the recent development in the ongoing saga of Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton has completed almost every quest in his Formula 1 career, except for breaking Michael Schumacher’s record of winning seven championships. Standing tall with seven titles to his name, the driver is desperate to win his eighth. He wants to win it with Mercedes, but it seems the team’s inability to develop a great car has hurt him a bit too much. It has hurt him so much that he is reluctant to put his name on paper to extend his contract with the Toto Wolff-led squad. However, Wolff isn’t one to back down easily.

Led by its president, John Elkann, Ferrari is readying itself to bring Lewis Hamilton to Maranello, much like in the past. With the news of the stable breaking bank to offer about a $50 million contract to Hamilton’s existing $35 million, Toto Wolff has made a major announcement worth about $86 million. In plans to revamp its infrastructure in Brackley, Mercedes also sees an upside, as the decision holds the power to influence Lewis Hamilton’s decision to stay with them.

The team plans to upgrade its existing facilities, which were built for 350 people but now employ about 1,250. The facilities are set to be on par with Silicon Valley plants, offering all sorts of amenities. As quoted by Motorsport Total, Toto Wolff revealed his master plan, saying, “We plan to expand the campus with several new buildings and create a modern campus, with many break areas, restaurants, state-of-the-art sports halls and new marketing buildings… We are not guided by our sporting competitors. We are guided by the best technology campuses we know from the United States. That is the ambition.”

“This is also a struggle to retain talent and hire employees and to be an attractive employer. This shows our commitment and that what we do applies to all of our employees. We want it to be a first-class technology campus,” he added.

To gain an advantage over their competitors, Formula 1 teams often poach engineers. This is where the new facility could also help Lewis Hamilton realize his dream. Wolff stated that they had to attract and retain the best people. He acknowledged that certain areas were no longer competitive because of the cost cap, and they would have to address this matter in the future, emphasizing the importance of having the best people there.

How will Ferrari accommodate Lewis Hamilton?

The challenge for Ferrari is to convince Lewis Hamilton of its project, which has so far had Charles Leclerc at center stage. With Hamilton heavily linked to Ferrari, two options open up for the outfit.

The first scenario is that the team pairs Charles Leclerc with Lewis Hamilton. This could potentially sprout a new challenge for the team, as neither of them would play second fiddle to the other. The other case is that the team lets go of its most loyal soldier and their golden boy, Leclerc, and brings Hamilton in to implement larger changes and hope that things work well. For Hamilton too, it’s a huge risk, as Ferrari hasn’t proven its mettle in the past decade, whereas Mercedes has already started to show signs of improvement.

The challenges will be greater for Ferrari than anyone could anticipate. In addition to just splurging huge sums of money on Hamilton, the team should work on the feedback given by other analysts about the inner functions of the factory that have failed to build an efficient system.
