After almost a year or more of struggling, Lewis Hamilton could sleep soundly after his race in Spain. The Brit forced Mercedes’ hand to bring massive upgrades to the car, and it seems they might be paying off. Or so we think, but before anybody gets ahead of themselves, the boss Toto Wolff threw some caution into the wind.

Despite the positive result in Spain, the timing of the introduction of the upgrade package was not ideal according to some. However, both Mercedes men delivered during the street race. They took a further step in the right direction during the race in Spain. However, despite the changed luck, speaking to Motorsport.com, Toto Wolff showcased a defensive outlook for the upcoming race in Canada.

“We’ve been rushing things over the past two months, and we were concerned about that because it kind of sidestepped the process we had in mind. But so far it has paid off,” said Toto Wolff.

However, he cautiously added, “We have to manage our expectations. So I don’t want to go to Canada and say it’s going to be second or third because it might as well be fifth or sixth. We still need to understand more.”

The Brit also shared this pessimism before the start of the Spanish GP. However, after the race, the Brit is a changed man and full of optimism. In fact, Hamilton feels the race result in Spain will become a standard.

The Brit might not be someone who agrees with the consensus. However, after the race in Barcelona, he might be ready to change his outlook. The Brit admitted he believes the race result in Barcelona will become the norm.

He said, “Normally they always say that if you are fast in Barcelona you are generally good everywhere. I think we will perform well in the coming races.”

One might be tempted to point out Hamilton had a positive race in Barcelona in 2022 as well. However, the race in Spain caught everyone, including Mercedes, by surprise and wasn’t part of the plan. The race in 2023 was more than a part of the plan.

However, life, especially in Formula 1, hardly ever goes according to plan, so it will be interesting to see if the race result in Barcelona in fact becomes a norm.
