By now, everyone knows that in 2025, Lewis Hamilton will be racing for Ferrari. After leaving Mercedes, Hamilton will have to get used to the ways of the stable. Along with the language barrier that the Briton will have to deal with at Scuderia, he will have to work without his right-hand-man Peter Bonnington. But this is not all.

This is just a part of the bargain that the 39-year-old has gotten himself into all for a faster car and his dream to drive for Ferrari. The main trouble that Lewis Hamilton will have at Ferrari was announced to the world by René Arnoux during an interview with Gazzetta.

During the interview with Gazzetta, René Arnoux spoke about what they think of the Hamilton-Ferrari transfer. He started by justifying Hamilton’s move as he said, “All drivers want to go to Ferrari, without exception. It happened to me too. Hamilton is a great champion, he has already won seven World Championships, but he wants to end his career in red.” While saying that his decision was the right one, René said, “The problem is that he will get there at 40, and in sports, age affects results. Many young people are strong: I don’t think that at 40 you can win a World Cup.”

When René was asked, “What if Hamilton were going strong instead? It would be a great rivalry.” To this, the F1 legend said, “Of course. Do you know what rivalry means for a driver? That when you’re on the starting grid you only have enemies around you. And the biggest enemy is your teammate.” Upon further investigation from the interviewer, Arnoux said “Schumacher-Barrichello, Schumacher-Irvine, Verstappen-Perez: the No.1 driver ensures comfort. The teammate has the same car, but the team is all to him. With Hamilton and Leclerc it won’t be the same thing.

The interview continued with the focus being Hamilton’s 2025 contract with Ferrari but what Arnoux meant by Leclerc being the reason for discomfort comes from the stable, finally promising Charles the attention he deserves. After neglecting Charles Leclerc and focusing on Carlos Sainz, the team had always put him on the sidelines. Before renewing the contract with Leclerc, Frederic Vasseur promised the driver the spotlight and a time when he would be served justly.

More from René Arnoux on Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari transfer

René Arnoux mentioned how Lewis’ age plays a factor in his performance. He discussed the psychological wear and tear, fatigue from extensive travel, and the challenge of remaining competitive throughout a long F1 season with 24 GPs.

Arnoux talks about the dynamics of having a strong teammate, labeling them as the biggest rivals on the grid. Contrast this with typical setups where the No. 1 driver has a comfortable position within the team, suggesting that the dynamics might change with Hamilton and Leclerc.

While his marketability might be an add-on benefit, Arnoux Dismisses the idea that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is purely a marketing operation.
