Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished an impressive P4 in a Turkish Grand Prix muddled with wet conditions. But from his post-race reaction, you would think he had finished out of the points, such was his disappointment.

Going into the final lap, Leclerc was right on the tail of Racing Point’s Sergio Perez. But unfortunately, a braking lockup meant that he could not steer home the car to P2.

Sky F1’s Martin Brundle observed that Leclerc was also tearful post the race. And feels that the Monegasque driver was just a bit ‘brutal’ on himself, following that performance.

Charles Leclerc was on course for his third podium in 2020

Writing in his column, Brundle stated, “There were phases where Vettel and Leclerc were fastest on track in their Ferraris, Vettel particularly impressive in the opening laps. Leclerc got ahead of him with pace and through the various dramas and stages but threw it all away three corners from home when he braked too late and turned P2 into a crestfallen P4.”

Nobody imagined the Ferraris would be right up there fighting the Red Bull and Racing Point cars. But in that regard, both Leclerc and teammate Sebastian Vettel had done enough in the race to clinch podiums.

“Like Hamilton, he was tearful in the parc ferme but for a completely different reason. That lad is brutal on himself.” concluded Brundle on the subject.

Indeed, Leclerc was heard heavily criticizing himself on the team radio after the race. His anger and disappointment knew no bounds, and much of that was down to the lockup in the final few corners.

There is no doubt that Charles is a top driver and will be the future star of Ferrari. But, he need only realize that all the podium winners were experienced racers, who have mastered the conditions over the years.

A slight tinge of inexperience should not take attention away from the fact that Leclerc achieved a P4 for the team. Ferrari, who have been struggling all season long, would be delighted with the points return.

In addition, Leclerc will get three more shots at a podium in the upcoming races. If he can keep the errors to a minimum and bolster his self-confidence, then champagne celebrations are not far off for him.
