Having enjoyed a brilliant 2020 season, Lewis Hamilton has effectively stopped at nothing. He has already sealed the Drivers’ championship with three races to go, having won the Turkish GP at Istanbul Park.

But, his contract negotiations have not been as straightforward as his racing campaign. Much speculation has arisen over whether or not he will extend for the next few years. Discussions could now commence though, considering he has now secured the title.

Speaking in the post-race press conference, Hamilton said, “It has to be organic and not something that’s forced. So, I thought let’s put it to… I bet on myself. Naturally there are days when you think ‘what happens if you start making mistakes?”

“What happens if you get worse all of a sudden, you don’t put in these great performances? Does your value decrease? Does your bargaining power decrease? Does your reputation go off a cliff?”

Undoubtedly, the thought of the best F1 driver on the grid being without a contract is unfathomable. But, Hamilton has no worried about his contract situation and believes that eventually, it will get done.

From that perspective, a new contract would reflect his willingness to go out and achieve that all-important 8th drivers’ title. Many thought Schumacher would do it in his final few years at Mercedes, but that never happened.

There is then a chance for Hamilton to rewrite the history books and indeed become the “greatest of all time” F1 driver. With the way he is going, it only feels like he is just getting started.
