Former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas spills some exciting details about his former boss, Toto Wolff. Having left at the end of the dramatic 2021 season, surprisingly for many, the Finn continues to remain much closer than expected to Toto. The two of them worked for five years at Silver Arrows, and now, as per Bottas, Toto is part of his managerial team, as he couldn’t have been during his time at Mercedes.
Bottas also revealed a crucial characteristic of Toto that keeps the team driving. It also serves as a testimony to the team’s success and to Williams’s decent run during the mid-2010s. It was Toto’s hunger and management that drove the team toward unprecedented success. As per Valtteri, who has been ever-so-close with the Austrian, he doesn’t like to compromise, which is keeping him moving as Mercedes continues to struggle on the track.

The Alfa Romeo senior driver talked about all this on the Beyond the Grid podcast. In a conversation with Tom Clarkson, he mentioned that not much has changed in his relationship with Toto. He said, “Like I’ve known him for a long long time and we still have a chat every now and then. He seems a bit stretched at the moment which is fair because only thing is good for him is winning, nothing else.
“It’s just not good enough. So I’m sure he’s pushing himself and everyone to the limit to get back to the front but yeah, he’s obviously a busy man but still a good friend.”
For many people, it may come as a shock for various reasons. But from all the glimpses that we have seen of Lewis and Valtteri together as if nothing has changed, we can only imagine the same with Toto.

The 2021 Abu Dhabi GP was a heartbreaker for the whole Mercedes team. The pain of losing the drivers’ championship overpowered the joy of winning the constructors’ championship. On the other hand, for Bottas, it was his last race with Mercedes; hence, the feelings were confusing.
When asked about the aftermath of the whole situation and how he was feeling after the race, the Finn revealed, “The aftermath was painful. The whole team was really suffering. Lewis was down, Toto was down. Even though we won the Constructors’ [Championship] when you lose the drivers’ title like that on the last lap, it was unreal. Just big, big disappointment for everybody and it took a while to recover for everyone in the team. It wasn’t my greatest memory. It was probably the best time to leave!”
