Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas is all set to join a new team at the end of this season. He is currently in his 9th season of Formula1 and 5th with the Silver Arrows. In a recent interview, he opened up about the mental health issues he faced early on in his career. Bottas’ first stint in F1 was with the Williams team where he initially served as a reserve driver before assuming a full-time role.
However, nothing came down easily to the Nastola born driver. He hit rock bottom quite early in his career following many events and he dealt with them to rise to the top again. 2019 was his best season in F1 where he clinched 4 wins and 15 podium finishes. He recently shared his thoughts on retiring from the sport.

Valtteri Bottas on considering retirement
In a recent podcast by Iltaleht, Bottas candidly discussed his toughest time in the sport. The Finn said that he drifted into a bad state of overwork. His eagerness and stubbornness took a toll on his mental well-being after a stage.

The Finn says he was even considering retirement after he felt his energies were running out. “Pretty much the same formula had to be made. At some point, it felt like the energies were running out. My whole life was just about F1 and nothing else. I didn’t really enjoy that job. During the winter, it had to be considered whether this should be stopped.”

Recovering through the hardships
The Mercedes driver revealed that at some point his ex-girlfriend suggested that he seek professional help. He made some changes in his approach towards racing. “Sometimes I got too serious about taking too many things,” said Valtteri.

Fortunately, the Finn feels he is now in a much better mental state. He focused on the positives, tried to be happy when the season wasn’t running, and consulted professional help.

As Bottas switches to Alfa Romeo from the next season, fans will be eager for the Finn to provide us with more memorable moments on the racing track.
