Red Bull doesn’t seem to want to call a truce on the Silverstone incident anytime soon. While everyone was waiting to hear from Max Verstappen, the driver’s press conference at Budapest presented the perfect opportunity. The championship leader had plenty to say about the first lap incident at Silverstone.

Verstappen suffered a 51G impact that was caused because of a collision with Hamilton in Copse Corner. While some say Lewis had space to go around the inside, or that he could have ceded; others argue Verstappen is to be blamed and could have gone wider into the apex.

Max stands firm in his argument that Hamilton is wholly at fault for the incident. Explaining the situation, Verstappen compares his incident with Hamilton’s move on Leclerc on lap 50. “I even left more space than that left by Charles,” he claims.

Verstappen added, “The maneuver he made on Leclerc shows that at that point you can try to overtake without making contact.”

The arguments about whose corner it was seem to be never-ending. While Toto drew out his explanation, Verstappen fights from his perspective. The FIA, on the other hand, concluded that it was a racing incident. Everyone has a different take.

Verstappen voices his grievances

Max Verstappen elaborates, “It does show that it is possible to go up the inside but then back out more, slow down a bit more and not hit the other driver. Because I think in the middle of the corner, I was actually opening up more than Charles did even.

“It’s a great example actually within the same race that it is possible to fight into that corner–cleanly.”

Red Bull clearly had the bigger loss, so their annoyance is expected. Not only have they lost points on both boards and have had their rivals catch up to them; they have also had $1.8 billion worth of damage to fix.

While Verstappen is still leading the championship, the gap between the two drivers has become uncomfortably close since Silverstone.

Will Max get his revenge this weekend? If he does, he could start running ahead of Hamilton again. If he doesn’t get the redemption he craves, he will have a very unpleasant summer break sitting behind Hamilton on the driver’s board.
