Sergio Perez expresses regret at inability to go racing

Of all the drivers looking forward to going racing this season, Sergio Perez is at the top of the list. The Mexican has good reason to feel positive about this season thanks to the car he gets to drive. For the unaware, the 2020 Racing Point strongly resembles the 2019 Mercedes car.

When the Silverstone outfit turned up to preseason testing, their rivals were stunned. The RP20 resembles the W10 in a highly uncanny manner. So much so, that several fans and drivers often refer to the car as the pink Mercedes.

Not only did the car borrow W10’s aesthetics but also its performance. Racing Point fared extremely well in winter testing and it soon became clear that they had developed or rather replicated a mighty package. This gives Perez plenty to be cheerful about. Knowing he has a car that could very well even take on the top 3 is no joke.

Speaking to F1, Perez gave his thoughts on the car and how he was coping with the shutdown.

“We are driving the fastest cars in the history of Formula 1,”

“You cannot imagine the speeds that we do in fast corners,” said Perez.

“It’s nothing close to previous years. The qualifying laps are going to be amazing. We are going to be breaking all lap records this year with the generation of cars we have, they’re simply the best cars,”

“The other day, I had a call with Otmar [Szafnauer, Racing Point Team Principal] and also with Tom [McCullough], our chief engineer, and I was telling them ‘you know, for the first time in our careers, we have a competitive car”

“Going to Melbourne in that sense, [with] all the preparation we’d all done, knowing that we had a good car underneath us was very painful, very painful”

Of course, it would be foolish to read too much into winter testing. It’s never clear what engine modes and fuel loads teams are running at any given moment. However, Racing Point is looking like the midfield favorite heading into the first race.
