Alex Albon had a highly disappointing campaign in the 2020 season. He fell short of expectations and lost his Formula 1 seat to Sergio Perez towards the end of the season. However, he is still associated with Red Bull in the capacity of a reserve driver.

The British-Thai driver was open about his feelings of being replaced by Perez. He stated he was hurt after hearing the news of replacement. However, he also claimed this is not his last year in Formula 1.

Albon is also a part of the second Virtual Grand Prix series that kicked off this Sunday alongside George Russell and Nicholas Latifi. Before the virtual race, the Thai driver was caught joking about losing his Red Bull seat.

He was waiting for other racers to join and said, “I’m a little bit sad, I feel like everyone’s busy, obviously I’m less busy.” Albon then burst into a laugh and continued waiting for players to join.

Alex Albon to race in DTM in 2021

Alongside the role of Red Bull reserve driver, Albon will also drive in Germany’s prestigious touring car championship. He will partner along with New Zealand racer, Liam Lawson, who finished P5 in last year’s Formula 3 series.

Helmut Marko explained the importance of Albon racing in the DTM series. “The DTM, with a high-class field and GT3 sports cars, is an interesting platform and a real challenge, both for successful race drivers like Alex Albon as for our Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson,” he said.

It is not yet confirmed which team and car will the pair contest from in the 2021 DTM series. However, it is clear that Albon has set out to expose himself and improve his race craft to prove he deserves a Formula 1 seat.
