Sad news hit Formula One at the start of the week as Sir Frank Williams passed away, aged 79. The Williams founder was an inspirational figure and will go down as one of the most important people in the sport’s history. As a tribute, every team in the paddock showed their admiration by putting on his logo on their liveries. Williams driver George Russell went one step further as he put a quote dedicated to the team’s founder.

Sir Frank was a big fan of the Hollywood blockbuster ‘ Top Gun’. The movie’s iconic line would very much justify the way the Brit lived his life.

” I feel the need, the need for speed. “ was seen written on the halo of Russell’s car as he headed out for his practice run.

George Russell pays an emotional tribute to Sir Frank Williams

As reported by GPBlog, the young Brit mentioned the Jeddah weekend will be an emotional one for the team. He stated he will race as hard as possible in his honor.

”We are here in Jeddah for the first time. It’s going to be an emotional weekend for the whole team, all things considered. I’m obviously looking forward to going out there, racing hard and as fast as possible in Frank’s honor,” said Russell.

”That’s what he would have wanted. We have to go out there with a smile on our face and do the best job possible for Frank and the Williams family,” concluded George.

The legacy of Sir Frank Williams will live on within the team and the sport. The team is the second most successful in the sport’s history behind Ferrari. Williams have 9 constructors’ championships to their name while Ferrari has 16.

Many of the best drivers in the history of F1, such as Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Jenson Button, have raced for the Williams team.
