The only Chinese driver on the grid and F2 championship leader, Guanyu Zhou, will make his Formula 1 debut this weekend at the Austrian Grand Prix. Owing to his status as a member of the Alpine driver academy, he will replace the 2-time world champion and Alpine driver Fernando Alonso at the Free Practice 1.

Like many other motorsport driver, Zhou grew up watching Fernando Alonso race, and to be driving in place of someone you idolized as a child is understandably a dream come true for him.

Posting a picture of him cheering for the Spanish driver at the Chinese Grand Prix in 2005, Zhou wrote, “Thanks for letting me have a go, I didn’t expect that in 2005 @fernandoalo_official [laughing emoji].”

Interestingly, Alpine were considering Zhou to replace Ricciardo for the 2021 season but the French team went for the experienced Alonso.
