Former F1 world champion Jenson Button celebrates his 42nd birthday today. One of the most prolific figures in the sport, Button enjoyed a dream stint in Formula 1 winning 15 Grand Prix in his illustrious career. He became the 2009 drivers’ champion, with the Brawn GP team competing against the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and Rubens Barrichello.

Button’s last F1 appearance was back in 2017 Monaco GP for Mclaren, his 306th Grand Prix start. Right after his championship year, he switched to McLaren and stayed with the team until his last race. He enjoyed a long stint (2010-2017) with the Woking-based team. Button’s best performance for McLaren came in the 2011 season, where he finished a close second to Sebastian Vettel.

The Woking team sent in their hearty wishes to the former Mclaren man. In a tweet posted earlier today, Mclaren wished Button with a pinch of nostalgia. The team shared a clip from the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, arguably the most iconic win of Button in his 306-race long career. It was one of the three wins that the Englishman added to his records that season.

McLaren F1 team wishes Jenson Button in style

Button joined McLaren ahead of the 2010 F1 season. He started 137 races for the Woking-based outfit, winning 8 of them along with 26 podium finishes. The highlight of his career, however, remains the 2011 Canadian GP. The race started behind the safety car amidst wet track conditions. After 19 laps, the race was red-flagged because of the worsening weather situation.

It started again in a while, but the disarray continued with multiple contacts and many cars were forced out of track due to wet conditions. Button was involved in a minor contact with Alonso on lap 37, where he suffered a puncture. Including that, he had to do 4 pit stops and a drive-through in that entire race.

However, he cruised his Mclaren back on the grid, passing Webber and Schumacher soon. He was still stranded behind race leader Vettel, but not for long. Vettel went wide on lap 70 as he turned in too late and Webber was through. After an awful afternoon, Webber led the Canadian Grand Prix from Vettel.

He saw the chequered flag as the race leader winning the Grand Prix, in what is remembered as the most sensational drive of his career. Fans could hear him on the radio cheering with joy, “That was one hell of a race, one hell of a race.”
