A Formula One car is constantly developed throughout the course of the season. With the knowledge that teams gain over a race weekend, they optimise their cars to extract better performance. Mercedes, as is obvious from their seven world championships, do a great job at it, and Lewis Hamilton took fans through some of the changes that he can feel once his car has been optimized.

Hamilton explains the development and how an F1 car changes

The seven-time world champion said, “The first time you get on track it is really difficult to feel the car really different because you end up just going faster. So you get an upgrade and you have few points of more front downforce, for example.”

“It could almost be the same as adding a front wing. It can be disguised in the balance. The areas that you do often notice is if the rear is more stable, so if you get more rear downforce, that is often the one that you perhaps notice the most.

“And most often you get an upgrade going to a different track it is hard to feel straight away that something has been added to the car.”

He continued, “So it’s not always easy to feel it, but there is a huge amount of work that goes into it, so much detail, so much design, and the build process, it depends of how big an upgrade it is.”

“Maybe something you get upgrades that are a tenth of a second, sometimes they are a few tenths of a second.”

Can Lewis bag another win for the Silver Arrows?

After achieving a controversial win at his home in Silverstone, Hamilton will now look forward to the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. The number 44 is well aware that his arch-rival, Max Verstappen, is looking to redeem himself by taking the checkered flag.

However, the 36-year-old has faith in his colleagues from Brackley for upgrading the W12 that is capable enough of keeping the Red Bull in his rear-view mirrors. Moreover, Lewis has a great record at the Hungaroring; he has won eight races at the track.
