Watch: Lewis Hamilton Narrowly Avoids Huge Crash With Latifi During Spa Free Practice

Fans were excited to see Formula One cars back on track for Friday’s practice session in the build-up to the Belgian Grand Prix. There were nears misses as drivers pushed the limit of their cars at Spa, one such incident was between Lewis Hamilton, and Nicholas Latifi.

As the two drivers were chasing down each other during FP1, they nearly had a collision. However, due to Hamilton’s quick reaction behind the wheel, the accident was avoided.

The 7-times world champion was behind the Williams’ driver as they tried to set the fastest lap around Spa in FP1. However, even though it wasn’t a race, both drivers were pushing each other to the limit.

Hamilton wanted to improve his lap time before the conclusion of FP1 and went for the gap that Latifi had left open. But, the Mercedes driver didn’t go for it as Latifi had soon closed. Due to the quick reaction of the 36-year-old, a catastrophic accident was avoided.

With FP2 just a few hours away both the Williams’ and Mercedes‘ driver would hope to give each other room so that they can avoid such a near miss, and have a clean session in Belgium.

How did Hamilton and Latifi do in FP1?

The 7-times world champion is used to see himself be in the top-3 on a timesheet. However, things were different for Hamilton as he only managed to be the eighteenth quickest around Spa with a lap time of 1:48:224. The Knight would aim to pick up the pace and redeem himself in the second practice session of the day.

Meanwhile, Latifi endured a terrible start to the session, as he managed to come sixteenth on the timesheet. The Canadian driver would hope to bounce back, and aim to lift the spirits of the Grove-based outfit by having a stellar pace in FP2.
