The Azerbaijan Grand Prix proved to be a turning for Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel. The four-time world champion recorded his highest-ever finish of the 2022 season in the street circuit. In what turned out to be a comfortable victory for the Red Bulls; a string of failures for Ferrari and Ferrari engine customers meant some teams moved up the order. After the race, Vettel asked his race engineer where Mick finished and what the issues were for the Ferraris.

Sebastian finished in a respectable P6 as the chequered flag fell. Recovering from a horrid start to the season, the former Red Bull driver has been able to make good use of the latest upgrades introduced by his team in Barcelona.

Sebastian Vettel inquires about Mick and Ferrari after the race

As the race came to an end, Vettel’s race engineer commended for the great job done by the driver. “Okay guys, well done,” said Sebastian. 

“I thought maybe we could have battled with Hamilton,” he added. “Well done on the pitstop, that was really good.”

The engineer also echoed the German’s sentiment as it was a strong weekend for the Silverstone-based outfit. Vettel then went on to ask about the finishing order. He got curious about his German compatriot, Mick Schumacher, and inquired about his former team, Ferrari

The engineer then responded, “So not sure with Sainz, Leclerc had a power unit issue and Mick finished in P14 behind Tsunoda, ahead of Latifi. Apparently, hydraulic issue for Sainz.”   

Vettel reflecting on the sixth-place finish at Baku

While a P6 finish was the best Aston Martin could have hoped for, Sebastian insisted that a fifth-place finish was possible for him and the team. He said to Formula 1, “Sixth position is really great – I think we can all be pleased with that result.”

“We have been pushing the limits of this car, and it is starting to pay off for us now. Today, we were faster than Alfa Romeo and matched Alpine and Alpha Tauri, and that changes the game for us a little bit. The team did an amazing pit-stop, which enabled me to jump Lewis [Hamilton].”

He further added about racing with Esteban Ocon. On lap thirteen, Vettel tried getting past the Frenchman on a long straight. However, his left front tire locked up and he had to take to the escape road in order to avoid any damage. A brilliant 180-degree turn saw him immediately rejoin the race behind AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda.

After Baku, Sebastian stands P14 in the driver’s standings and will be looking to Canada for an even better result.
